Scratch skills today included importing sprites with scripts already created. Our challenge was to understand what each part of the imported code would do and then alter it some way for our game. Some of these scripts had to do with a gravity code, a spinning and jumping code, and drawing codes. A few of us moved on to creating a mind map using Inspiration to detail the structure of our game. We also visited the green team to see their progress on their games. Take a look at the pictures for this week so far. Links to downloading Scratch and PIQ are on our TECH Camp symbaloo.

Today we introduced Scratch. We played a few games and began to learn the platform. The skills we worked on were coding the sprite to move with the arrow keys, animating the sprite, and coding a chasing game. We started planning our games, creating storyboards, and actually coding the games. The green team came and gave us feedback on our plans and the beginnings of our games. Take a look at the pictures of today. Can't wait for tomorrow!

The second day of the week was Scratch, Scratch, Scratch! We learned how to broadcast a command and change levels. This required a lot of coding, since we needed to hide some sprites and show others on different levels, it could get quite complicated - ask your child about this! We also played some Scratch games that older students made and evaluated them. After playing these games, we agreed that adding directions at the beginning of the game was very important. Some students used the program PIQ to create pixel art as Scratch sprites (avatars). At the end of the day, we visited the green team and looked at what they had created today.

Third day of camp was quite eventful. We played a new Scratch game, evaluated it together, and continued to work on our projects. Many students have multi-level games and clear directions already created.. They are coming along! We learned about X-Y coordinates and how to use these coordinates to place our sprites in our games in specific positions. We shared our games with the green team and got their feedback on how to improve our projects. We ended the day with Color Wars - reverse charades, retrieving marbles in water with our feet, and a water balloon toss.
